A vigorous Mexican butterwort hybrid (P. agnata × moctezumae) bred in 1998 by Jan Flisek and Kamil Pasek and registered with the International Carnivorous Plant Society in 2001. 'Aphrodite' inherits the long, arching leaves of its moctezumae parent, with strap-like rosettes that can stretch up to 10 inches in strong light. Foliage ranges from soft green to blushing pink depending on intensity, each leaf coated in sticky mucilage that traps fungus gnats and other small insects. A near constant bloomer, sending up tall stalks of violet flowers throughout much of the year.
What you'll receive
Live, juvenile, rooted Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' shipped bare root.
Size at shipping: a juvenile plant. This hybrid grows large (up to 10 inches) but ships well short of that. Our photos show mature specimens grown under strong light. Yours will size up with good care.
Care overview
Mature size: Arching leaves up to 10 inches across in strong light
Light: Bright indirect to full sun; more light brings out pink tones and tighter form
Water: Keep moist with distilled or rain water during carnivorous phase
Winter: Shifts to a compact succulent phase with smaller leaves; reduce watering
Common questions
How big does 'Aphrodite' actually get?
It has the largest leaf area of anything on our bench. Under strong light the strap-like leaves reach up to 10 inches across, which also makes it the most effective gnat trap we grow.
Is it harder to grow than a compact butterwort?
No. The care is identical to the smaller cultivars, it simply takes more room. If this is your first carnivorous plant, our first-butterwort guide is worth a read.
Is it safe around pets and children?
Yes. Mexican Pinguicula are non-toxic, and the leaves only catch small insects.
