Drosera capensis 'Red'

A deep red form of the classic Cape Sundew from South Africa. Under strong light, the entire plant flushes crimson from stem to tentacle tip. Each leaf is lined with glistening, dew-tipped glands that trap fungus gnats and other small insects on contact. One of the most visually striking sundews in cultivation and one of the easiest to grow.

Seed-grown plants. Produces tall racemes of small pink flowers throughout the growing season.

Common questions

How is sundew care different from a butterwort?

Sundews want more water. Stand the pot in a shallow tray of distilled water through the growing season rather than watering from above, and give it as much light as you can. Our Cape sundew care guide covers the differences in full.

Why isn't my sundew turning red?

Almost always light. The crimson colour develops under strong light; in dimmer conditions the plant stays green and still grows fine, it just won't colour up.

Is it safe around pets and children?

Yes. Sundews are non-toxic, and the dew-tipped leaves only catch small insects.
